North Somerset

Welcome to the North Somerset section of the CPRE website.

hareNorth Somerset covers an area that stretches from the Severn Estuary and River Avon in the north to the Mendip Hills in the south. More than two thirds of the district is rural with around half of the land in Green Belt (map to come).

The population of the area has increased rapidly over recent years, with new development focused particularly on the four main towns of Weston-super-Mare, Portishead, Clevedon and Nailsea.

This new development, not being employment led, has increasingly added to the numbers that commute out of the area each day to Bristol, Bath and beyond.

Lack of adequate public transport, particularly in the rural areas, is one of the reasons that North Somerset is among the highest numbers of car owners in the country.

Development and Urbanisation

fete 2006Because of our proximity to the two major cities of Bristol and Bath and also having Bristol International Airport and Portbury Docks in our area, we are under increasing threat of further development and urbanisation.

We work to preserve the landscape of North Somerset, protecting the natural environment and encouraging responsible quality development that recognises local character.
