Housing and the Regional Spatial Strategy (RSS)
The volume of housing will be one of the major challenges for North Somerset in the future. The Government’s ambition to build more homes has meant proposals for 26,000 more homes (additional to those in the Local Plan) to be built in North Somerset.
Within these numbers, 9,000 are proposed in Green Belt in the North of our area and 12,000 in and around Weston-super-Mare.
These proposals are contained in the Regional Spatial Strategy produced by the South West Regional Assembly. We have provided a detailed critique of the proposals and have directed the Regional Assembly to its own Strategic Sustainability Assessment that provides a clear argument against many of the main document’s proposals.
